The biggest winners and losers of the Oscar nominations

The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced overnight, with fan favourites in for a shot at snagging the coveted Oscar awards.

Actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams made the announcements from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Some nominees came as no surprise to avid film fans, while others were a shock, with some favourite apparently snubbed by the Academy.

Sci-fi comedy drama Everything Everywhere All At Once scored 11 Academy Award nominations, the most for any film in 2023, with Best Picture well within their sights.

All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin came in second with a total of 9 nominations each.

Australian actor Cate Blanchett was honoured with a chance at Best Actress for her leading performance in the psychological drama Tár. Cate is a favourite in this category, and a win would see her with three Oscar awards to her name.

In the Best Actress category, many were shocked to see Viola Davis snubbed for her work in the historical drama The Woman King. Viola had been a contender for the award all season, with recognition at the BAFTA Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Australia’s own Baz Luhrmann missed out on a nomination for his directing work on Elvis, but the film didn’t miss out entirely, bagging nominations in eight categories, including the sought after Best Picture.

James Cameron, director of Avatar: The Way of Water, best known for directing Titanic, did not receive a nomination for Best Director either.

Catherine Martin, the most awarded Australian in the history of the Oscars with four wins to her name, received two nominations for her work on Elvis for both Costume Design and Production Design.

The nominees for Best Actor came with no surprises, though many thought Tom Cruise may feature there for his performance in Top Gun: Maverick. Hugh Jackman also missed out on a nomination in this category for his work in The Son.

Despite snubs in other categories, most films were acknowledged with multiple nominations, though perhaps not always in the areas they wanted. Fans were certain the likes of The Woman King, Babylon, and The Whale would be up for a chance at Best Picture, but each was left disappointed when the list of contenders was announced.

With six nominations, Top Gun: Maverick looks set to take home at least one award, but all eyes are on Tom Cruise and his chance for a first Academy Award win. While he wasn’t nominated for Best Actor, the film did secure itself a chance at Best Picture, with many praising the Academy for honouring a box office success.

The winners of the 95th Academy Awards will be announced on March 13 (Australian time), with comedian Jimmy Kimmel set to host the event.

Image: Getty Images

Cate Blanchett hints at early retirement

Cate Blanchett has alluded to an early retirement from acting in a candid interview.

The Aussie actress, who is currently based in Los Angeles, is primed for yet another Oscars win for her role in the upcoming psychological drama Tár, but shared that the movie took a major toll.

Chatting with The Sunday Project, the 53-year-old said she was still trying to "process" the emotional load of working on the film, in which she plays the fictional world-famous pianist Lydia Tár.

“I think it was because it was such a physical role, the echoes of it are still with me and I think I’m like a lot of audience members, I need time to process it,” Blanchett said.

“Obviously I’m lucky enough to work with some amazing directors who have changed my life, but when it all comes together like that, it does stay with you."

“So I don’t ever want to work again …” she added, laughing.

After working in show business for three decades, Blanchett admitted she has been “profoundly homesick over the last four years”, after basing herself in Los Angeles from 2015 alongside husband Andrew Upton and their four children.

“‘I’m very obsessed, as most Australians, obsessed by water. I want to be by the water, in the water,” she said.

“I would love to learn to be patient, to be still and think. My grandmother was a wonderful gardener and my mother is likewise an excellent gardener and she lives with us, and I really want to spend time in the garden with my mum.”

At the end of the interview, The Project co-host Hamish McDonald joked, “Congrats on the film, and your retirement.”

Blanchett added, “I’m sure there are millions of people around the world applauding right now.”

The Campbell sisters open up about their rivalry to Andrew Denton: "We're invisible to each other"

Aussie swim stars Cate and Bronte Campbell have revealed in a new interview how they juggle being both sisters and competitors.

Speaking with Andrew Denton on his new show, the sisters talked about their experience racing against each other at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

When Bronte won gold in the relay race at the games, video footage emerged of Cate looking reserved, prompting rumours a rift was developing.

Elder sibling Cate watched on as the Aussie team broke the all-time World Record with a time of 3:30:65.

The announcement that Cate had been left out of the women’s relay team occurred just hours before the race.

When Denton asked if there was any tension between them behind the blocks, the sisters confessed that they were “invisible” to each other before the race.

“Behind the blocks, it’s like, ‘She ... I don’t know her. Why would I help her?’” Cate said, laughing.

“That sounds pretty selfish but, at the end of the day, it’s your race. You just gotta do your own thing,” Bronte said.

Denton asked the siblings if any pre-race sledging went on between them.

“No, we can’t do that. That’s pointless. I mean, at the end of the day, when we’re up there and especially when we’re racing against the rest of the world,” Bronte said.

As the interview went on, it was clear the Campbell sisters didn’t have any jealousy over each other’s successes.

“If you can’t do well, you want your sister to do well, you want Australia to do well, you want your family to do well, you want someone you love to do well and so why would you jeopardise that?” Bronte said.

Cate, 25, and Bronte, 23, described what it was like when they were racing against each other in the individual 100m event – with Bronte taking the gold.

“I was breathing in Cate’s direction coming into the last 25, and so I could see her. I could see she was ahead of me and then that was the last time I looked at her. It was pretty overwhelming. You could feel ... you could hear the crowd, so I knew something was happening. I don’t remember it, to be honest. I remember bits of it but I don’t have a very clear memory of it at all,” said Bronte.

Cate explained that the final moments of the race were a blur for her too.

“I could see that Bronte was right next to me but, like, you’re breathing so quickly and you’re so low in the water and there’s water going everywhere that I didn’t exactly know,” she said.

“You know, it’s why people watch sport and, honestly, people are like, ‘Oh, you know, aren’t you annoyed at her or angry at her?’ I’m like, ‘no’. Yes, everyone loves to win. I’m not going to deny that. But I’m so proud of Bronte and what she’s done.

“You know what? Coming second isn’t that much of a big deal. Like, everyone wants number one.”
